For more than two centuries, The Factory House, located in Porto, Portugal, has stood as one of Europe’s most distinguished wine institutions — a place of ceremony, tradition, and influence at the heart of the global Port trade. In 2026, for the first time in its 236-year history, its doors are open to the public.

The Factory House, completed in 1790 and overlooking the Douro River in Porto’s historic center, has served for more than two centuries as the ceremonial and social heart of the British Port trade. Built by British merchants resident in the city — whose association dates back to at least the 17th century —”the House” became the headquarters of what is today known as the British Association, formally constituted in 1811.
Today the building remains owned and stewarded by its member Port companies, including Symington Family Estates. It continues to function as a working institution, hosting formal dinners, tastings, and meetings that shape the traditions of one of the world’s great fortified wines.
For generations, entry was by invitation only. Within its elegant rooms, Port shippers gathered to discuss commercial alliances, uphold traditions, and celebrate one of the world’s great wines. Visitors may now experience this remarkable institution firsthand.
Guests will explore the Adam-style Ballroom, historic double dining rooms, underground cellar, and a private library containing rare books, maps, and archival materials that trace the rise of Portugal as a maritime trading power. Among the House’s most significant artifacts is a visitors’ book signed by officers of the Duke of Wellington’s Anglo-Portuguese army following the liberation of Porto in 1809 — evidence of the building’s place not just in wine history, but in European history.
The visitor experience is offered in two formats:
Morning guided tours and Vintage Port tasting (strictly limited in size)
-2 Vintage Ports selected from the private stocks of member companies — wines rarely poured outside official House events.
Afternoon self-guided visits
-Incorporate multimedia storytelling to animate the House’s archives and explain the commercial, diplomatic, and cultural frameworks that defined the Port trade for generations.
The British Association remains a non-profit body dedicated to the promotion of Port wine and the preservation of its traditions. The opening of the House marks a significant moment: not a transformation into a museum, but an unprecedented invitation into a living institution.
In a city increasingly defined by contemporary tourism, The Factory House offers something rarer: access to the authentic infrastructure of Porto’s wine heritage.
