Wine Buyer for the Wine Society, Victoria Mason MW, was awarded the 2024 Quinta do Noval Award for the best research paper (RP) by a new MW at the Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW) annual awards ceremony in Vintners’ Hall, London.
Judged and presented by Christian Seely, Managing Director of Quinta do Noval owners AXA Millésimes, the accolade was awarded to Victoria for her research paper, An investigation into the enablers and barriers to the adoption and practice of regenerative viticulture in Stellenbosch, before an international audience of friends, family and Masters of Wine.
The Research Paper is the final stage of the iconic Master of Wine Exam. It is an individual project of between 6,000 and 10,000 words on a topic chosen by the student. In recognition of her achievement, Victoria will receive a cheque for £1000, a framed print of Quinta do Noval, and a trip to the iconic property in the Douro to collect a case of celebrated wines and ports.
AXA Millésimes established the Quinta do Noval Award in 2001 upon becoming a principal supporter of the IMW. Commenting on Victoria’s paper, Christian Seely said: “Competition this year was very strong, but this paper was just outstanding. The rigorous analytical approach of the study revealed the complex issues surrounding the adoption of regenerative viticulture, documenting both the challenges and the rewards involved. I found it both very readable and fascinating. Bravo!”
On receiving the award, Victoria Mason MW said: ““I feel over the moon! Completely delighted and just so grateful for all the people who have supported and guided me to get to where I am now. I put my heart and soul into this Research Paper – on a topic and a region I care deeply about – so it is wonderful to be the recipient of this amazing prize. Thank you to Quinta do Noval and thank you to everyone involved in my research.”
