In December 2024, Eduardo Chadwick embarked on an extraordinary journey. To climb Mount Vinson, the highest peak of Antarctica and one of the most coveted World’s Seven Summits, alongside Mounts Everest and Aconcagua.
This adventure crowned 2024, an intense year of celebrations of the 20th Anniversary of the Berlin Tasting across the globe. Eduardo, together with his daughters, Magui, Pepa and Alejandra, had previously conducted 13 wine masterclasses in Berlin, London, Sao Paulo, Rio De Janeiro, Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Zurich, Toronto and Santiago to celebrate Viñedos Familia Chadwick wines’ unique leadership in gaining global recognition for Chilean wines.
The monumental hike lasted 10 long days, climbing with ropes to ascend the steep slopes from low camp to the top at 4,892 meters, requiring a high level of fitness and mental stamina. Temperatures below -40 degrees C and winds up to 120 miles per hour were part of this inhospitable, but breathtaking landscape.
“Antarctica is a very special place; this icy landmass is the coldest and windiest continent on Earth. Reaching its highest peak was a unique and challenging adventure”, Eduardo Chadwick commented. He continued, “Mt. Vinson is one of the most pristine, clean, beautiful and remote mountains of the world. Every step we take in such a wilderness area, we must think of the explorers who pioneered the path before us. Roald Amundsen in 1912, followed by Robert Scott and Ernest Shackleton, who were a great inspiration to my journey.”
Why Antarctica? For Eduardo Chadwick, this was not just another summit. It was a symbolic ascent, an homage to the incredible success and track record of Viñedo Chadwick, and particularly its 2021 vintage which tasted ‘delicious’ at base camp. This was the wine that achieved six perfect 100 points across the most renowned international wine critics, including the first coveted 100 points from Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - an historic first for a Chilean wine and a symbol of Chile’s rising stature in the fine wine world.
This relentless pursuit of Eduardo’s dream echoes his philosophy in life – to push boundaries, embrace change and celebrate achievements. This is exemplified in this feat, by paying tribute to a wine that, much like his adventures, defies all expectations. As Eduardo reflects on the journey, it’s clear that his sense of adventure, his respect for nature’s raw beauty, and his love for fine wine are intertwined in a story of triumph and inspiration. “Some dreams take a lifetime to fulfill, but the ones that challenge you the most are often the most rewarding,” Eduardo muses. And from the highest peak of Antarctica, Viñedo Chadwick reaches even greater heights.
